Writing A Doctoral Dissertation About Scientific Illiteracy: Topics On Kent Hovind
Kent Hovind is a conspiracy theorist who has developed his own theory on how the earth was formed. He tries to convince his listeners to reject the sciences of evolution, cosmology, and geophysics and promotes his own interpretation on the Bible’s version of events. In 1991, Hoving created Creation Science Evangelism and spent his time talking about the creation of earth in many seminars.
Hovind was convicted in 2007 and sentenced for ten years in prison for structuring cash transactions. He was sentenced because he did not have the proper licensing and was not registered as a not for profit organization when he started spreading the word about his beliefs and for failing to pay back taxes as a result.
Hovind wrote a doctoral dissertation on scientific illiteracy in 1991. In this dissertation he asserts that every word of the Bible is true about the creation of the Earth. He total rejects the scientific evidence in regards to the creation of earth.
What is scientific illiteracy?
Scientific illiteracy is when an individual does not understand scientific concepts or facts. A person who does not believe in the things that science has proven about our world is considered to be a scientific illiterate. Hovid is considered a scientific illiterate because even though there is scientific proof that the dinosaurs did not exist in the same era as man, he believed that they did. He also believes in the religious creation of earth story and disregards the idea of evolution.
Ongoing Battle over creation
The church and scientists have gone back and forth for centuries as to how the earth was created. The Bible states that God created everything in seven days. Scientists believe in the evolution of different species.
Now that you have an idea of the background information in regards to this topic, it may be easier to decide what topics you can discuss pertaining to scientific illiteracy and Kent Hovind. You can also write about if a person like Kent Hovind should be considered a scientific illiterate because of his strong religious beliefs. If this is the case are all Christians scientific illiterate because they believe that God created the Earth or is Hovind just illiterate because he took the word of the Bible too literally. Perhaps both sides are correct and that God created the world in seven days but the seven days were not our twenty four hour days. This will prove to be an interesting topic for your dissertation.
